PhantomVPN, owned by the German anti-virus company Avira, offer a consistent, handsome looking VPN client that is a great choice for the mainstream VPN user. When connecting the app defaults to the OpenVPN protocol, possibly the most secure protocol available, and connection speeds are adequate enough for trouble-free streaming.
Server locations are limited in scope with just 36 available but the robustness of the server performance means users will experience smooth connection and speeds over even the most remotely located servers. For additional security, Avira has their own first-hand DNS and VPN servers that they maintain.
If users feel that the free version of PhantomVPN limits them in their online activities then a 30-day money-back guarantee is available with the purchase of the full PhantomVPN service.
WHAT ARE THE PROS
Simple, nicely-designed, unobtrusive apps on desktop and mobile
Consistent speeds and reliable performance
Unlimited simultaneous connections - great value
WHAT ARE THE CONS
Missing more advanced privacy settings
Based in Germany, falling under EU data laws
Server network on the small side
PhantomVPN only runs on the OpenVPN protocol which supports all widely used operating systems and provides an extremely high level of security. The company has adopted the position of a virtually zero-logs policy.
All metadata is erased after 30 minutes and an inbuilt kill switch blocks all traffic should the connection drop. Despite being located in Germany and therefore falling under EU data laws, PhantomVPN is able to negate EU jurisdiction via their zero-logs policy and maintenance of their own servers.

PhantomVPN users will encounter download and upload speeds that are satisfactory in the main. HD streaming is possible without buffering and speeds are consistent even amongst the most remotely located servers. Low latency means that gamers will be able to play online without disruption and any lag.
There is a noticeable difference however in the time that it takes the desktop app and mobile app to connect with the desktop app being markedly slower.
We continuously test the performance of all our featured VPN providers to ensure you have all the latest information you need to choose.
For this provider, we use our own proprietary speed test tool to track speeds between servers within each location with traffic directed through the VPN provider.
Our base (no VPN) download speed is around 80Mbps, upload 90Mbps and ping 3ms and results are from London to the listed locations.
Our tests are intended to give you an idea of the range of connection speeds. The closer the server and faster your connection, the faster your speeds.

PhantomVPN have servers available in just 36 countries which is just below average compared to most other mainstream VPN providers. For some unknown reason, they are reluctant to disclose the precise number of servers and IP addresses that they have. What is confirmed is that there are servers available in most widely selected countries, including Australia, Canada and the UK. The US, however, boasts 12 city specific server locations.
Using PhantomVPN couldn’t be simpler; in one click the user can be connected and protected. And it has a user interface that is pleasing to the eye, and even more impressively, it allows for as many simultaneous connections as the user requires.
Despite the positives, the app does suffer from some critical issues. It offers no advanced settings that can be manually optimised and no VPN protocol variant other than OpenVPN. Although the main screen looks great and is well designed there isn’t any visible connection data and the app is restricted to work only on Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android systems.

Notably, PhantomVPN doesn’t have a live chat feature but email support is available 24/7. Response times are efficient and the support is genuinely helpful, so long as the question doesn’t require any server details.
User resources on the website are sparse but this is perhaps reflective of the simplistic nature of the app itself. Video tutorials and a selection of FAQ’s are present but the email user support is dependent on having a paid subscription.
WHAT ARE THE PROS
Consistently solid and reliable server performance
Killswitch is nice feature at this price point
Unlimited simultaneous connections
WHAT ARE THE CONS
No configuration options, basic or advanced
Limited server selection
Falls under EU data laws
